15:32 that's a couple of minutes drive from me. That is MINOR flooding. Big floods in the Gulf Country can be a torrent of water 50 miles wide, where every road or house succumbs to their path. Think of the Amazon or Mississippi, but at LEAST 10 times as wide. It's often called not a river but an inland sea as dozens of rivers join together. When it rains in central Australia, it's usually tropical Monsoon rains or Cyclones, dropping 6 or 8 inches an hour. This is NOT an exaggeration.

Populations are wrong, but it's all about how you apply the demographics and defined "city areas". Gold Coast (QLD) has a population of TRIPLE that of Hobart at 735k Newcastle has a populaton of over 500k, as does Canberra(ACT). Sunshine Coast (QLD), Logan (QLD), Central Coast (NSW), Woollongong (NSW) and Geelong all have populations bigger than Hobart. Hobart is 13th by population in Australia, at 232k.

Coober Pedy is our most famous and largest underground city, with a population 10x the size of White Cliffs. It also sees far higher temperatures, like 126 Fahrenheit (52 Celsius). It's over 500 miles north of Adelaide into the centre of Australia. It's not the hottest or Driest place I've visited. I've personally experienced over 55 Celsius in the Simpson and Tanami Deserts. The Great Sandy Desert might even be worse, but I cannot confirm that as I have never been there. Only a handful of buildings in Coober Pedy are above ground due to the heat and dust. We nuked areas nearby in the 1950's during British nuclear testing. Look up Maralinga. I guess we thought they couldn't get any worse.

This is why PETA and the Greenies are wrong. Their solutions are always too expensive and too late.

Australia has issues not from space, so much as when it was populated and the natural resources. Australia has a population at 9 people per square mile, Nevada 28 per square mile. New York 415 per square mile. It's a combination of built infrastructure, expectations, culture, demographics and resources. Nevada is more culturally and demographically accurate than New York Australia only averages 16 inches rainfall per year. That's more than Nevada, which averages 10, but that includes the tropical areas. There are parts of Australia that average over 200 inches per year. Most of the inland averages more like 4 inches per year. We can only support more population through massive infrastructure investment and massive lifestyle change.
