I went with junior and her school to the Horniman in South London. One of the talks was about the Benin Bronzes. Now they are beautiful. That shocked the Victorians that Africans could produce art at that level. Now there's of soldiers sanding over the bronzes. The argument gets put forward that this is a triumphant photograph of looting. What wasn't put forward was that the bronzes themselves are a celebration of the rulers killing, taking slaves and looting of a neighbouring state. One form of racism is good the other bad.

Yep. So parts are interesting. The racism that Africans couldn't have made them. Must have been Egyptians [not classified as African, part Greek, part semitic] is clearly there. But that the bronzes were trophies of war, the photograph was a trophy of war. That both were the same, omitted. The first bad, second was good. So in reality, they were just being racist in the same way the Victorians were racist. @darrenbaxter9980

My understanding is that it came from Libya in exchange for salt etc. On the metals front, there is evidence that Iron smelting was going on in Africa, "invented" independently. So wouldn't be far fetched to bronze. I think its easy to underestimate the exchange of ideas, of people of goods in the past. For example, why would Byzantine goods turn up in Scandanavia? Chinese goods in Rome? @Compairholman
