The best decision I ever made in my tech career is to work remotely BEFORE covid. When people tried to tell me the only reason we weren't in the office anymore was covid, I was already used to working remotely. I already knew it was complete BS to blame "covid ending" for the reason most people were back in the office. The real reason offices exist is for the ego of the executive team. The reality is, you have meetings anywhere quiet, you can write code anywhere period, and you don't need to walk down to my desk and read my name tag. This may bug the hell out of IT, because they can't just go to my cubicle where my barcode-tagged, company devices are; but IT can suck it. Learning to be remote and still be an effective communicator was the most valuable thing I ever did.
