  1. The tarsier is named for its elongated "tarsus" or ankle bone. Although tarsiers were once more widespread, all of its species living today are found in Maritime Southeast Asia, specifically the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei. The most famous of the tarsiers is the Philippine tarsier, who are popular with tourists and are sought out as pets or sold for trade, despite its low survival rate outside of their natural habitat with living just up to 12 years in captivity to 24 years in the wild. Previously all living tarsiers had been placed in the genus Tarsius, but a 2010 taxonomic revision placed Philippine tarsiers in their own genus called Carlito (named after conservationist Carlito Pizarras). Horsfield's tarsiers from Borneo and Sumatra are also in their own genus called Cephalopachus
