This word can be written in the same characters as the Japanese zaibatsu (meaning financial clique), as both these words have Chinese roots. The Japanese zaibatsu (or keiretsu nowadays) were powerful monopolistic conglomerates of pre-war Japan, with four big ones. Sumitomo, Mitsui, Yasuda, and the most famous being Mitsubishi. They were broken up by the GHQ (General Headquarters; another name for the Supreme Commander for the Allied Powers during the American occupation) but later on loosely reconstituted.
