@gamermapper It doesn't apply to Crimea because armed troops started the referendum and only Kremlin-backed observers were allowed to observe to see it was fair and legal. UN and OSCE wasn't allowed to observe the proceedings, and Putin literally PLANNED to take Crimea prior to the so-called "referendum" to begin with. He literally ADMITTED it already. So you're arguing a point to which only could come from Kremlin propaganda that was already admitted to be propaganda by Putin himself. Imagine being that much of a sheep then, that you still believe them.

@dahlbelzalan5892 What borders have any Western nation violated? Are they ones internationally recognized, or ones which Russia had declared as theirs? Because if its the latter, then no Western nation is going to respect it if only as a sign of support of Ukraine. But even then, these "incursions" are nowhere near large enough to ever threaten Russian territory; it'd be literal suicide. Hell, even the US troops in the region barely number enough to hold the line if a Russian invasion occurred; so why are you acting like the Western powers are the aggressors when Russia has amassed around 100k troops? What kind of "invasion" from the West involves no amassing of Western troops? Troop numbers even lower than Russia's? Russia literally is bringing in the bigger army and the only one mobilizing its military near another country's border, and you act as if they're the ones being attacked? How? NATO taking in more members literally doesn't do anything to Russia but remove another possible country to fuck with. Unless most of NATO mobilizes its troops near Russia's borders, which it has NEVER done, there is literally no threat to Russia. Yet you act like the US is bringing in 20k troops in each NATO member and are trying to add such numbers everywhere for the perfect multi-route invasion. @Rodo Sandoval Okay, but most of those conflicts are over and done with. The new people living there are not the ones that invaded and stole territory; the land they are sitting on is all they ever knew and were born from. Kicking out people to restore some arbitrary old border would do nothing but commit another atrocity in the name of correcting a prior one; and will just start that cycle over again. Kaliningrad is Russian until they themselves don't want to be. Promote independence then, but not before. What makes Crimea so fucked was that Russia itself forced the referendum under highly suspicious circumstances, even if Crimeans when last polled may have even legally chosen to join Russia.

Русс град Well, yeah. History is funny; many abhorrent things done can become national myths for the nation that survives it and becomes independent later. If the Occitan became independent at some point, they'd likely have the "anti-French" sentiments for the same reason of being culturally suppressed for "standardization" too. If the Poles or other groups never got independence, they might have not ever formed their national identity behind its resistance. It all depends how history worked.

@BLMVDV We have examples literally neighboring Russia that democracy works; so it's not like Westerners are endorsing this impossible system. West took a hands-off approach out of fear of stirring the pot unnecessarily and then got stuck in the "end of history" fantasy that we'd all sing kumbaya and be best friends in a new age of progress. Putin partially helped kill that idea, but reality really set in following the start of the US War on Terror in the ME and the new crises that started everywhere.

And no, sorry, but the US is simply in another league when it comes to being a "nicer" country than the USSR by miles and miles. The time after the USSR fell was literally the greatest in all of human history by every metric; health, economic well-being, happiness, lowering poverty, etc, etc.

Either way; the entire thing was fraudulent from the start and the UN and other international groups were specifically barred from inspecting the referendum to begin with. Nothing about it was free or fair.

Also, ethnic changes over time is a thing; otherwise everyone would have to depart back to their "ancestral" lands, which is unfair to the people living in the lands NOW. No one is demanding that Russia leave everything east of the Ural Mountains because they brutalized the natives there.
