US from a European point of view has always had a "failing political system", so that's not anything new. I can't remember the French philosopher that made a novel about the US and talked about its failings as a society and predicted its imminent collapse; but that it was a general opinion from Old Europe that the US was a collection of super rich people putting duct tape on people to make a society.

They're not. They're as normal as other people that travel more often; the "normal people" are those that are generally ignorant of the world around them. Unlike the US though, there isn't a massive media presence aimed at your "normal people".
