  1. Japanese Government was only horrified specifically because a war with the US was not advisable at all. If it was a small nation helping out, it'd shrug the death off. That's what fervent nationalism tends to justify.

  2.  @susakuzero  Well, let's be honest here. While that is true, its also true that the Civilian Government took advantage of the situation and used the enflamed the rising nationalism by lionizing the troops. This includes glorifying the conquests while downplaying the horror.
