@trev6004 The Islamic Golden Age is very much often taught in basic Western education, but like most things, the nitty gritty details are lost. At least as an American.

@Scientin Southeastern history will never be taught more in general history classes; the region doesn't really affect the wider world anywhere near as much as Western Europe, East Asia, the Middle East, North Africa, or the Indian subcontinent.

@malachiphoniex8501 Jesus dude, no way any history class can even get to a fraction of that compared to other topics. People seriously need to stop expecting schools to get into their pet favorite topics -it's meant for general education.

@Itcouldbebunnies None of those events had a massive impact on global history at all compared to their contemporaries. The Korean War, Berlin Crisis, beginning of the Cold War, startings of the Vietnam War, and more were concurring. It was very important to the region to be sure though.

@malachiphoniex8501 No, I'm saying that general education can only focus on world events that are most critical to understanding the world today. That includes the greatest of ancient civilizations, the development of the early modern period, the creation of the most powerful of modern nation-states, and the circumstances of the most global-spanning conflicts in history. A lot of that is "Eurocentric" by the Early Modern period, but much of history taught before that has nothing to do with Europe either. In my school we barely learned anything about France or the UK despite their future importance until the advent of Colonialism -we more focused on the Ottomans and the Mughals in the 15th-16th centuries. This as an American. There is a penchant on the internet to frame that Western education, American in particular is too Eurocentric and should branch out more -and I fear that is more ideology than anything else as what I remember was only Eurocentric at the latter quarter and necessarily so to understand the modern world. Any less Eurocentric and we won't even know how WW1 started at this rate.

@malachiphoniex8501 So you propose that general education be thrown out for the latest tryst in the latest hotspot region? Because that's basically what you're crying about -and that's not how a general education is supposed to function. It isn't anyone's job to educate you about X, Y, or Z even if the US Government is getting embroiled in the region -the best way to handle that is to research yourself. And again, every minute spent on NOT important things to satisfy your "NEED" to understand X or Y conflict means a less intelligent American public about stuff they need to know about the basic of basics. So unless you propose all US education to become some hyper intensive history course where every single culture gets their own month where every facet of their history, legends, and cultures get broken down for public consumption -idk what to tell you. This was my issue from the start, you are acting like what is supposed to be a general education into something which has to talk about what YOU want. And that's just not how any educational system is supposed to work. FFS, who the hell says crap like "he fact that no one is getting any good lessons anymore are why we have things like the Wars in Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq, race riots, extremist organizations, and culture wars" is the problem. Wanna know why so many people call Americans stupid? It's because they're projecting themselves; those same people are as braindead ignorant about the world around them. Have you ever, even once traveled outside the US? I have -and everyone is as ignorant as Americans, they just don't have a world media point it out for them. Basically, I'm telling you to grow up.

@malachiphoniex8501 Also do some traveling. You desperately need some perspective. I still remember the one time a French dude complained about how ignorant and backstabbing Americans are because the US dared to not support them in their imperialism in the Suez Crisis -most people crying about US ignorance are either themselves ignorant or are mad that a situation that they are hyper focused on because they're in the region doesn't get super heavy focus elsewhere across the planet.
