@filmandfirearms What are you talking about? Russia has lost multiple wars in its history; the Livonian War, the Smolensk War, a few wars with Sweden, one of the Napoleonic Wars (3rd Coalition, I think where it was essentially slapped around?), the Crimean War, the Russo-Japanese War, WW1, the Polish-Soviet War, and the First Chechen War. Russia lost a lot of wars, and even the ones it won were sometimes pyrrhic in nature.

@Mal101M It should be noted that we know this AFTER the fact. Fact is that many countries and their militaries are hyped up for the benefit of domestic consumption and external threats; yes Iraq was not as mighty as it was on paper, but that goes for every military ever. That being said, it should be noted that back then and now, Iraq had a higher GDP per capita than Ukraine did then and now -Ukraine by many respects was even more of a failed state than Iraq was. The difference, really, was the spirit and training born from a newly revitalized nationalism born of an unjust conflict. It's essentially why Iraq was crushed by ISIS initially after the first US departure and why it got its act together later on -unity against a common foe creates the spirit for nations to fight.

@Mal101M Vietnam is kinda unique; in that the US did not actually fight a conventional army. This entire conversation was based on conventional army vs conventional army -and in Vietnam the US went into South Vietnam essentially forced to fight an ongoing guerilla war against the VietCong instead of another army on the field. Russia has yet to go through with this in Ukraine; it's fighting another conventional army as the US did in Iraq -if Russia reached Kyiv and capitulated the rest of the country then we could talk about guerilla warfare. But that doesn't seem too likely now.

@Mal101M In 1991, Iraq would have gotten away with an invasion with little issue if not for the US Coalition. At the same time this invasion is happening, there are wars in Somalia and Nigeria ongoing with not as much attention. Fact is that specific situations lead to specific outcomes; the US "got away" with invading Iraq because of sympathy from 9/11 alongside Saddam Hussein boasting to everyone that he had WMDs after having been aggressive a few times before. You can consider it unfair, but let me put it to you this way; Russia has invaded Georgia in 2008, crushed Chechen independence, bombed Syrian rebels and civilians extensively, and has effectively stolen Ukrainian territory in 2014 without much pushback either. That was not fair for Russia's victims either; but they got away with it because Russia for better or for worse hid their actions behind a veneer of legality. The US has as well. If the US does something crazy one day, like invade Vietnam again despite it causing no trouble to warrant it or having a history of such trouble in recent memory; you will find much of the world also standing up to the US for moral reasons...while others do it for geopolitical reasons. Others will stay silent for their own security reasons as well, or just give lip service. So basically; it all depends. Ukraine in 2003 likely didn't want to ruffle any feathers, France and Germany was secure in its alliance with the US to condemn US actions. It depends.

@Mal101M I don't recall ever saying there was a country that didn't suffer defeats. I was dismissing the other dude saying that Russia barely loses because of its culture of sacrifice or some crap.
