The History Guy: History Deserves to Be Remembered

In a fight that saw a small detachment of Marines drive back a first amphibious assault before succumbing to a second one, and then hundreds of Americans enslaved by a Japanese regime that could rival any in history for its brutality, the fate of some evolutionary dead end that existed on a small island in the middle of nowhere seems utterly trivial and unimportant.

@robertcoward9923 We're talking about real human suffering here. The demise of some bird that, as an evolutionary dead end on a tiny island in the middle of nowhere, had lingered on the brink of extinction for its entire existence, kinda pales in comparison to what the Japanese did to human beings.

Wake Island was where Imperial Japan got its first small taste of what happens when you fight US Marines. We drove the point home hard for them from Guadalcanal to Okinawa.

The Marines remember. And anyone thinking of fighting American Marines should remember as well. Even in an unwinnable fight, we punch above our weight, and even when the odds are hopeless, we will maul you in a way you won't soon forget.

@jaydee040 I've been to Okinawa, and trust me, the people there don't agree with your nonsense one bit. You're confusing the US with the Japanese and the Soviets. Or just being willfully stupid.

@jaydee040 You have nothing to say, and you're saying it too loud.

@robertcoward9923 I'm all for wildlife conservation. But, I also understand priorities. And when it comes to the lives of people, especially Americans, and even more especially Marines, I don't care about some damn bird. Would it be better if the thing still existed? Sure. But it isn't something I'm going to lose any sleep over.

@phillipdavidson7689 That's just entirely false. An infantry officer and a pilot go through two very different courses of training. However, some Marine pilots do end up attached to infantry companies as Air Officers, whose job is to coordinate between the infantry on the ground and our air assets.
