Another thing Mattis did quite well is inspire personal loyalty. I was in the Corps from 2003-2007, I never met the man myself, and only briefly served under him (when he was CG I MEF), but Mattis was always the one general who we Marines looked up to. Natonski, Huck, Hagee, nobody cared about any of them, and we usually referred to them by their first names (though obviously not to their faces). Never so with Chaos. His no bullshit style of command was something that even us lowly LCPls respected.
