  1. "Plotting to regain her throne" is one way of putting it. "Years of civil war" would be a more accurate one. Matilda wasn't exactly the type to just meekly take it, she was quite adamant about regaining her birthright (at least as she saw it), and so they went to war. Turned out that her son and grandson Richard were equally belligerent, and both renowned fighters to boot.

  2. Not queen consort, Empress. It was apparently an important difference. Henry II, her son, even called himself Henry FitzEmpress to emphasize her role.
