  1. Wait, only three major battles after Guadalcanal in the island hopping campaign? Because I guess Peleliu and Tarawa and all that never happened, huh? And no, we didn't "lose more men" than the Japanese on Iwo Jima. We lost about 6,800 killed - a staggering number to be sure. The Japanese lost essentially their entire 20,000 man force killed. We had more overall casualties than the Japanese did - about 26,000 total - but this includes casualties of all types, from minor wounds that wouldn't have taken a Marine out of the fight to killed in action. So while we had more overall casualties, most of those casualties either returned to the fight, or at least got to go home. The Japanese casualties were essentially all KIAs.
