  1. It's not at all "half joking". At least when I was in, cutting scores for 03 series MOSs (that is, infantry), were extremely high, making it hard to pick up Cpl. Furthermore, Sgts were mostly in B billets - I think my company had a total of three of them. Thus, rank was far less important than experience. Senior LCpls comprised virtually all fireteam leaders and a good many squad leaders as well. POGs in comm and supply picked up Cpl in under two years, but most of my peers in the infantry got out as a terminal lance - myself included.
