  1. George I reigned from 1714-1727. That's slightly less than 200 years before the SMLE was invented, and significantly predates the metal cartridge. And it wouldn't be GIR anyway, it would just be GR - they never start adding numbers until the Second (if you look at the bow of the HMS Queen Elizabeth, named for Elizabeth I and not the current monarch Elizabeth II, the insignia just says ER and not EIR). Something is fishy about that marking - if it was made in the 1920s, it should be George V - GVR.
