  2. From one extreme to another. Today we don’t have a drafted army. It’s enlisted volunteers. They don’t need to be treated like trash, but they can’t be supported too much. The stress of DS’s wasn’t just to break in unruly draftees. It was also intended to stimulate extreme & crippling stress that people will face in war environments. You can’t send people into hell without first desensitizing them to said hell. That’s how you get a platoon that crumbles at the first real conflict.
