  2. It would be scary, because Russia would compensate its military inadequacy with tactical nuclear strikes, leveling the playing field. Putin has nothing to lose in total warfare against NATO. America and NATO have a big bark when it comes to threatening mutually assured destruction in global thermonuclear war. However, western nations have EVERYTHING to lose in a war against Russia, and would be hesitant to respond to nuclear escalation with further nuclear escalation. One does not throw away their global hegemony to deal with a strapped mob boss with a nuclear arsenal.
