  1. A WW2 vet of my Regiment said to me, "it's nice to see a new crop of vets". I was dumbstruck. I said how could you say that. I would've thought that you would hope that you would be the last veterans of this regt. You know what it's like. That's why you became a doctor after the war; switch from killing people to saving them, right? And in your war you knew what is was about and what victory looked like. Berlin. Come home to a big parade. Greatest generation. We didn't understand our war. Neither did our government. Much less what "victory" looked like beyond flying home on the passenger deck of a plane while others returned home on a cargo ticket. Nevertheless, I am thankful for my experiences. I know it sounds bizarre but it took war to realize how much I loved my comrades.

  2. "The firefights were fun"... there are a lots of different reactions soldiers had. I giggled a lot. I was happy. The sense of victory at then end of it; just being alive. That was the victory. My experience with war started at 39 yrs old. And this went on for 13 years in Afghan and Sahel. I miss it so. What bothered me was the young men that died before they really lived. I was 39. So I figured that if I died, I already had lived a life.
