  1. When I was new in Afghan, a guy told me "it's better to be lucky than good". Didn't click in at the time. But over time, I understood and started to "build my luck" into my activities. If doing something got me a perceived 1% more chance, I did it. One time stopping for a cigarette (disguised as a convoy rest halt) saved me. I ended up doing 82 months there. Sometimes, in the chaos, the stars align for you. Just accept it. The universe is a random number generator. So don't let it haunt you. Embrace that the RNG worked for you that day.

  3. It sounds like KAM Air crash in Kabul 2005 except with an unhappy ending. The nearest alternate was BAGRAM (USAF Base). The rumour is (I was in Kabul at the time) that they were not allowed to land at Bagram. So they circled Kabul in fog with no ILS until they ran out of fuel and pancaked into a snowy mountain. Snow storm prevented Afghan army from reaching the site for 3 days. When they arrived, the black boxes were "missing" 🤔
