  10. The Wapanogg hired the Europeans to end their enemies and had a feast to celebrate the new alliance that's all the historical Thanksgiving ever was Prior to the colonization process the natives never saw themselves as a collective singular identity or a singular nation, there was some attempts once European colonial powers process started in the Americas via the French and British arrival like Tecumseh and Poundmaker but they were too little too late In fact most natives saw themselves mostly in the styling of by a small tribe of a few hundred and they would have rival blood enemies for life merely because they born of one tribe and their ancestors had feuded with another tribe that had hurt them generations past The collective identity nowadays didn't develop untill the time of Manifest Destiny and westward expansion which admittedly was the worst time for them as the constant wars with the various tribes and the US government started around then as well as the forced relocations The latter today would be considered ethnic cleansing, but you can't and in my opinion shouldn't go back and try and punish people of today for sins in the 1800s That sets horrible precident However you're right those wars started in the 1850s didn't end untill the last Native rebellion was put down in 1922 that's almost a century! But yeah pretty much the entire idea of Thanksgiving when it was being pitched to President Lincoln was to try and bridge the gap between a nation that had nearly split in two, via the civil war and promote reconciliation and reflection The idea of the holiday nowadays is completely changed and it doesn't have to carry its old symbolism symbols are allowed to change they are not static and don't need to stay the same And like you I agree we should promote this as a means of reconciliation and acknowledgement
