It seems to me that Catalonia does not have a just and legal case for the basis of succession. When Yugoslavia broke up Kosovo and Serbia cited cases of violence and human rights abuses. Catalonia as far as I can tell merely wants tax reform. Not enough on the International scale to put forth a claim for independence to the UN Security council and gain recognition from the EU. Granted Spain does not have a seat on the Security Council, it does however have a seat in the EU. And should Catalonia somehow issue a formal statement of independence, and desire to continue to reap the benefits of the EU, it must apply for membership and all the EU members must agree. Spain if it lost Catalonia, would most definitley vote against Catalonia EU membership. Meaning Catalonia would be outside the EU. Spain currently is debating the use of Article 155, to suspend autonomy in the region by force, the other option madrid is mulling over is to try and negotiate with Catalonian successionist leaders. Spain has sucessfully isolated Catalonia in both Europe and internationally. Meaning unless Catalonia is successful in obtaining a formal diplomatic recognition from another country, I do not see Catalonia surviving after the invocation of Article 155. But I envison Force will be met with Force. A pro catalonia faction will use violence to reassert their claim to independence. And we may see something similar of the spanish civil war.
