Comments by "rejvaik" (@rejvaik00) on "Catalonia independence referendum" video.
My scenario; The result of the referendum will be favorable to Catalonia and unfavorable to Madrid. Madrid will then dispute the result, declare it illegal, imprison activists and participaters. Catalonia will no doubt respond with an increased desire of seccession and national pride. Violence will now be seen as a means to uphold Catalonia's process to succession after the legal route to statehood fails. Pro-Catalonia supporters will find a target that carries symbolic meaning and its destruction will help eradicate said symbol of oppression. Madrid will no doubt respond with extremely forceful measures if said target was successfully destroyed. With violence erupting international attention will focus briefly on the area. Madrid and the government of Spain will use this attention to try and appeal to the UN security council and the EU to not recognize Catalonia as a nation. Meanwhile violence is increasing. Remeniscent of the Spanish civil war, with some commenters no doubt making the same comparison. Catalonia will be persuing its own method towards international recognition, likely citing claims as an unjustly conquered ethinic group with a distinct culture and language seperate from the rest of the Spanish people. Possibly appealing to that of a colonial status, with its people attempting to remove the powers of its colonial masters. The international community likely not wanting any more violence erupting in europe, from anyother competing Nationalist/Seccessionist ideals and a swift end to the conflict, will side with Madrid and provide economic assistance over military assistance. The businesses and tourism in the region of Catalonia are decimated after the violence began. And what few residents/ international travelers remain uneasy in the region. Governments around the world issue travel warnings to the region. Commenters begin to question the status of the EU once again, after Britan attempts to leave and spain is tearing at the seams. French troops are sent to the border to deal with refugees fleeing the region. Madrid is successful in supressing the violence and seccession movement. But the idea of independence remains in the mind of Catalonians. Madrid will now govern the region with a more militarized force to minimize chances of repeated violence. Much to the dismay of catalonians who now solidfy their beliefs for independence. And no doubt will reattempt seccession as a justified response to the increased mistreament of spanish forces.
