  1. Oaxaca (pronounced as wah-ACK-ah) is the native homeland of the Otomi. A very proud indigenous tribal group with a history of mercenary warriors. They opposed the Mexica (later renamed Aztec) when they arrived in the valley of Mexico and continued to resist Mexica dominance unto the Spanish arrival.
