So the defense idea is to make it so that your nation's economy is so intermingled and connected with that of your neighbors that you couldn't persue military actions because it would cost your country more to go to war than it the spoils of victory would bring you. This is the reason for the EU existence. It is not a long-term strategy because each nation has separate interests and needs but it works in the short term.
