@Beatyofeet32 The "cost" of something is a very subjective metric designed to get the libertarians in an uproar. The truth of the matter is that all the equipment is already owned by the State and already budgeted for. The police, the labs, and the equipment are all on payroll. Trying to say "it cost this much in manpower and resources" is dumb when it's already a flat-rate. Think about it: the police make the same salary whether they are assigned to traffic duty or a murder investigation. The equipment was already bought, whether it was used or not. The lab technicians run the tests regardless and are on salary as well. The only metric that matters any differently is "overtime" pay for anyone that has to work late on a case. I just need to shove the two-bits into it. I loathe when people try to dictate state salaries to doing things we pay taxes for in dubious terms such as "costs" - especially when it would have been the same rate.

@HaleyOnTheRocks yeah it's just good to put that out there. People ask if you can put a price on human life and we have literally budgeted that out - they just complain about the bill in one way or another. Unless they pull additional manpower from a for-profit resource or require the purchase of additional equipment, all expenses are already accounted for in some budget or another. If government employees aren't taking care of their job, they are still salary for their time. Gas. The paper and ink for the very simple "SEARCHING FOR:" Flyers. Overtime. Extra food. Court fees usually charged to all parties for filing (thousands, at it's most- extreme). The jail cell is there, empty or full. If everything is already accounted for it doesn't cost anything additional to the taxpayer. It is just being expressed in taxpayer value.

@EarthIsNotFlat "solving a murder" isn't productive? I'd argue that it is what we have police for - not writing traffic tickets.

@mikeawesome9212 nope. That is totally accurate. If there is no crime going on, the officers are still salary. If there is no forensic testing going on, then that professional is on standby or doing other tests for other cases. This leads to insane calculations of "cost" that libertarians like to fling around willy-nilly to complain about taxes and by advocates to justify their yearly budgets. "WE SPENT HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON ROAD ENFORCEMENT" is a nonsense calculation that mostly consists of salaried govt employees. If nobody was speeding, they would still be on the clock and on-standby for any criminal activity in the area.

@AbsentMinded619 It doesn't cost EXTRA. It's already in the budget
