  2. ​@gabeminajj I'm innocent and just tell officers that I don't consent to searches as a principle. What's nuts is that a few times they literally WERE just fishing, because they said "okay! have a nice one" and let me go about my business.

  6.  @gabeminajj  Your example is incorrect. It's like someone telling you to buckle your seat belt, but you deciding not to because a majority of accidents are survivable and you trust your driver. Yeah your car driver might be really good and in an accident you might not roll over and throw you out of the car. Just like the officer might be good and might not arrest you for a two-week-old beer can from a camping trip (open container) or plant evidence on you. Submitting to a search is allowing them to use anything and everything in your vehicle against you. The same goes for talking to the police without an attorney. You might admit to a crime and not even realize that you are and - even if it isn't the reason they are talking to you - they can take you in. In fact there's an entire questioning strategy based around telling someone that they need the person's help and that they aren't worried about the "smaller crime." But idiots will STILL talk to the police willingly and without an attorney.

  7. @ZooZoo293  Yeah they have asked to search my car multiple times for unrelated stops and one time they came up to my door to ask about a separate incident. It's always the boondocks nowhere Sheriff's that ask to search your car

  10. @paigeanguish6216  They generally can't until a certain age and even then it has to be about criminal activity towards the child itself. Many many states have rules against questioning children without consent - especially if the parent is in their presence to revoke that consent (which she could do immediately).

Back in the day? Yeah you're right. Grandma could have been in another state and nobody knew - But there is evidence she didn't leave, and a witness saying that she was there when she wasn't, and when she wasn't there she said she was somewhere that she wasn't. AND she was medically dependent on regular doctors visits. Motive. Means. Opportunity.

In fact there is an entire interrogation technique aimed around getting a person to confess to smaller crimes to make themselves seem like a petty crook or criminal in the face of a completely-fabricated serious charge. Ex they suspect you for breaking into cars. To get you to confess to breaking into cars, they tell you that Grand Theft Auto is a serious charge. You say "Grand Theft Auto? I just busted windows out. I never stole a car." Yes, this is highly controversial and unethical. Yes, this has led to false arrests and convictions. Yes, that is allowed by police in the USA.
