This was so crazy and unnecessary this really is. Not only has she been the main character of the past two movies. The actress that plays her sister, ortega, was already out due to filming schedule with a show. And they have a separate dispute with the previous main actress neve campbell due to pay disputes. And they were switching creative leads at the production level as well. So she was all they had to tie the movies together, and the arc they had going. Rumors were they would bring back the second killer of scream 1 to confront her. They still have some options like trying to spin off an old character, a new character, trying to pay neve more ect. Its just crazy how much they shot themselves in the foot over it.
