It's interesting that their experience sounds a lot like just the immigrant experience even if they were born in the U.S, or are just half. Seems like the same flaws and things happen. The parents don't think to teach systematically. Maybe they aren't used to the idea, or they think it's better for the kid to acclimate to their current environment. Or the influence of the U.S where people more rarely learn languages. But it's amazing that these people went back and are trying too.
