I think that a few of the comments are confused. Maglev in its "normal" implementation is either attractive or repulsive. Magnets in the train and magnets in the rails. This somehow doesn't need a repulsive or attractive other magnet in order to lift. Its all contained on one side which makes it revolutionary and interesting that it hasn't been discovered before. Usually a magnet will attract itself to a metal surface - we have all seen electromagnets lifting cars at a scrap yard. Why is this lifting and not clamping? I wait for a better understanding of how it actually works.
