We protect the democratic process by making folks in the chair realize that they will be held responsible for anything criminal while in office as soon as they leave office. A true democracy demands it. To not do so by giving immunity you create an autocrat and next would be a facist government where one word rules. Its already been stated during his two impeachments that as soon as he became a citizen, the protection stopped. Stop calling him president. He is a former president who as a citizen can be prosecuted as one.
