Air sealing, super insulation, triple pane windows, high efficiency heating and air conditioning systems, LED lighting, energy efficient appliances, set back thermostats, solar panels with battery storage and a 220 volt outlet in the garage for an EV charger. All these should be considered when trying to save energy on any building. I had a whole house audit with a blower test done on my home. It was paid for by my local utility. They also paid for 50% of the air sealing recommendations. I went ahead and did all the recommendations. The very next month by utility bills dropped by over 30%. Over the past few years these savings have really added up.

  2. Energy audits with a blower door test finds air leaks that may not be easily found without it. Any ceiling opening for can lights or bathroom vents leak air. These all need to be sealed. Any opening in the ceiling to the attic needs to be sealed. This includes vent stacks. A good air sealing contractor can work wonders in making the home more energy efficient.

  3. Too many people look the cheapest replacement they can find. That is a mistake. Paying a little more for higher energy efficiency pays you back over and over every year. People need to look at long term cost savings and not short term fixes.

  6. LED light bulbs are great. They are a big reduction on energy draw. One other benefit I love is that they last much longer. I used to have to change my outside light on a yearly basis. Since going with the LED bulb a few years ago I have not had to change it. Putting LEDs in all those high, hard to reach areas means you will spend less time on a ladder trying to change them out.
