  3. All new buildings and major remodels need to be built / remodeled to modern energy efficient standards. More insulation, air sealing and blower door testing, LED lighting, triple pane windows, 2 x 6 or 2 x 8 wall construction, energy efficient heating and cooling systems, energy efficient appliances, solar panels and battery storage, an electric vehicle charger or 220 volt outlet in the garage all add to the comfort and energy efficiency of the building. People are too short sighted and only look at upfront cost and miss out on the long term savings by spending a little more on energy efficiency and quality building techniques.

  4. Building codes in cities and states need to be upgraded to include current energy efficiency building standards. Too many contractors are just building poor quality buildings that cost a fortune to heat or cool.

  5. All real estate sites need to have an energy score for the houses they sell. Utility bills per square foot or some other measure. That would help get people thinking about the monthly cost of their energy use. Also it would be great if people could search the sites by energy efficiency. Maybe people should ask Zillow, Realtor.com and Trulia customer service to update their sites and add a new feature on energy efficiency. They have a score for flood risk. They could add a score for energy efficiency.
