The thing is due to massive collaborating with naaSSee Germany, when Germany occupied Crimea almost all Crimean-tatars took part in genocide against Slavic population of the peninsula: Russians, Ukrainians, Belorussians. And I believe Stalin was actually quite gentle with those naaSSee supporters.

  3. My grandmother and my uncle voted in 20 January 1991 referendum in Crimea to rejoin Russia. She was born in Crimea before peninsula was transferred to Ukraine soviet republic in 1954. Uncle voted again in 2014, although she died by that time, she would be happy to know Crimea got back home.
