I think there's a romantic misunderstanding about how scientific theories come about: Sitting under a tree being hit by an apple is the faintest part, maybe sometimes being able to trigger a thought process, but certainly not crucial to it. Einstein didn't discover relativity because of his limited mesocosmic imagination abilities, but in spite of them! If an AI doesn't have physical experiences and limitations, that's actually an advantage for devising microcosmic and macrocosmic theories.

Awesome indeed, but i think Data was still painted with human biases in mind: Why would a machine be perfect in everything but human emotional behavior? It makes funny content of course, but only makes sense by assuming some human supernatural essence or "soul", ultimately derived from religious ideas. The reason Picard was Captain rather than Data, was exactly his competence in human emotional behavior. If a machine were capable of that, no reason to keep Picard around.

Right! There was this paper out recently that AI could predict studies' results better than field experts exactly because of this reason.

Doesn't mean it's not coming.

I like that way of thinking, makes it easier to bare if we get wiped out in the process

Let's hope your romantic ideas are never met with hard reality

Right. But there's also no alternative to it, since everyone pulling the brakes will soon loose to the one who doesn't. Until everyone looses. Or everyone wins :) So fasten your seat belts and hope for the best, even if chances are odd.

@xuko6792 not sure what current AIs state is the expression of actual desire or mere role playing... still, embodyment in robots is certainly going to take them way further.

Better be scared... positive note was just a coping mechanism :)

How long do you think robots won't be able to do that kind of work? Hardly any relevant time to talk about, if you ask me. So it comes down to your AI boss and us.

Be careful not to fall for induction fallacy. Just because something hasn't been the case yet, doesn't mean it will never. Humans couldn't fly until they could. And they were never replaced until they were.

Ever heard of speciesism?

@moonboots1003 So you think animals can be conscious but not AI?

UBI or revolution... or dystopia

Indeed... it is somehow disheartening how the "smartest" are often as prone to self-serving and other biases than the rest of us.

Reason one sounds like gpt1 will still be used rather than gpt4 in some instances, because gpt4 may have overlooked something. And reason 2 sounds like dolphins will have some role in scientific progress because of their difference in experience.

So how will those that reject AI defend against the ones that don't? They would have to be left alive by pure mercy.
1
Let's hope this is the only problem we have to worry about
