As were the Neanderthals...

And Prometheus

@jamesragsdale8202 lions, snakes, aliens, water, fire, rocks, stars, trees, gravity, ... basically everything ;)
4
Of course, everybody speaks Latin!

Has any good in history been created following the "true" god?
3
Maybe that's why ;)
2
@mylesadavis oh, i had a completely different view on history, from crusades to religious terror attacks or states of god showing bad influence of religion to laicism enabling true democraric and libertarian structures
2
Sounds about right ;/
2
You think a merged AI would be able to compete with a pure one? If i merge with an idiot, i become half-idiot after all...
2
Same if you're Christian, Hindu or believe in Zeus. Problems only arise if your belief turns out to be wrong...
2
Or we just start thinking about the real threat without using religious terms
1
@althe don't agree, because we loose everybody who's not a believer from that specific religion. The problem is a general one.
1
No need to be religious to think this is a wrong path.
1
For this year, probably...
1
@hickerbilly345 not sure what you're talking about, but there are robots being built right now that can already do some human tasks, and machines don't need a reason for anything... they just function and converge on certain goals, see instrumental convergence.
1
That's why it's unlikely AI will have such a goal. However, consider how many other species have become extinct even without us having that goal ;)
1
Sounds good! How sure are you though that these efforts won't result in more suffering? Or even extinction?
1
Right... like the first faulty fire arms proved there will always be a need for bows and spears... ad nauseam ;)
1
Since there's no commonly accepted definition of consciousness, i find your hypothesis hard to corroborate... my intuition, however, is something like integrated information theory, which would assume a gradual amount of consciousness for any kind of turing machine.
1
Unless they are already beyond Mars...
1
Even without these countries, US companies would engage in the same race to the bottom. As if shareholders would willingly give up profit for some more safety ;)
1
@WeAreAllOneNature not sure if you're addressing me or some other comment... however, i am certainly wary of AI and its dangers, i'd really like Demis Hassabis' idea of a CERN for AGI development... how unlikely that's going to happen, unfortunately.
1
What about the possibility the book of revelation is just a book?
1
@acem82 not surprised to have 100% hit rate if you define hits according to it ;)
1
Indeed ;) And even if they merge, unmerged true AIs will probably still have the crucial advantage...
1
Read up Instrumental Convergence
1
@SirSithly ok, great! You're exactly right, it applies to both humans and machines. That's why i didn't understand your original comment, where you doubted why AI would pursue power... this is part of the convergent goals, isn't it? If you ask me, we're still alive now because there was no human with superpowers so far ;) Probably also because humans tend to be aligned in a way that most of them wouldn't like to pursue a goal where no other human happens to be left alive... a human paperclip machine just seems hard to imagine for me ;) So, in my opinion, it comes down to either not create ASI before making significant progress in alignment research. Have you by any chance read the Anthropic paper "Alignment faking in large language models"? Found it quite scary, to be honest...
1
Don't you think there's some technology that is rather bad? How about atom bombs or chlorine gas? But maybe you mean the scientific progress behind it... there i agree! Suggest you read one of the recent papers on alignment faking, however... maybe it gives you some new "bad technology" examples ;)
1
Don't worship your kids?
1
Why should a merged AI be able to compete with a pure one? If i merge with an idiot, i become half-idiot after all...
1
These may sound like horrible scenarios, but still things may get even worse if alignment doesn't work out. Just to cheer you up a bit ;)
1
As concerning as these developments are, common sense is actually the worst way to address them... it is simply not equipped to understand any of them, starting with exponential growth.
1
Makes sense ;)
1
Believing in fixed dogms disables adaptation
1
Keep on dreaming then :)
1
Just because there's a movie, doesn't make it true... however, in this instance, probabilities are actually not too great right now ;/
1
Have you read the recent paper "Alignment faking in large language models"? Seems you're not up to date any more ;)
