  2. Once again you missed a lot and flubbed a bit. You kind of glossed over the rather diverse 8bit era in Japan. Then you totally missed the MSX stuff. Finally, it is rather wrong to imply that Japanese writing was the reason for anyone not making it in the 8bit market. At that time, most software was kana only and often half width katakana only. Also the Japan market had dedicated word processor systems far longer and more ubiquitously than anywhere else.

  4. US carriers barely hold a candle to the data rates in many other countries. iPhone’s biggest carriers were in China before even officially being launched there. Japan’s major carriers went through an incredible price war until the Japanese government stepped in and made them compete for retention instead of constant race to the bottom pricing. Singapore carriers competed well through effective services bundling. In the end, mobile device makers paved over all the real deltas with further and further developed base band and antenna capabilities. These days only the spectrum and physical network topologies remain major barriers with the weaker US networks requiring different antenna tuning than most other markets.
