  1. I work in green energy and often spar with my inlaws who are very very proenvironemtalism. They actually speak as if there is no one standing up for the trees and they're taking down big oil until you point out that many energy companies are also the ones who are selling them solar/wind dreams. We got them to independently verify their solar panels because the sales person was saying they were 50% efficient and we're going to last 50 years. Turns out they're 50% efficient meant 50% of them worked. Green Energy is limited. It's constrained by the laws of physics. Shockley-Queisser limit means single p-n junction solar won't get beyond 30%. It has been you can get beyond it using other types of solar but don't expect those to be commercial any time soon. I run into the argument of "give it time and it will get better" similar to batteries. The fact is at some point you cant get any better except for very incremental improvements. Throwing money at it won't do any good, just the universe says "that's all I'm giving". I'm not saying we're there right now, but I'm saying we likely are close without a major break through. Antimatter batteries may do the trick, but they're a long ways off, and if we keep going with only slightly better production at the cost of endangered elements we may be screwing ourselves over in the future when that breakthrough needs platinum but all of it was mined away a hundred years before for crappy batteries or solar cells.
