@goto8438 when my husband and I were in Australia we gave a tip to a waitress in Sydney, she didn’t really speak English and gave it back like 3 times before we just left it on the table. I have noticed traveling abroad that wait staff sucks compared to US. Many were rude or stand offish while in America they have to be ultra polite and attentive so they get their tip, even at places that have automatic gratuity added.

Coffee shops in international airports make bank on tips that don’t get reported. People trying to get rid of their US currency or who have just gotten to the US, there is usually $100 tip in the jar. I’ve seen someone put in $500 because it wasn’t worth the bother to exchange it.

They won’t be audited. Most don’t pay taxes of on it.

I made over $600 doing online surveys this year in gift cards. Just helped me buy presents throughout the year for family. I’m expecting to get audited because of it and will probably pay an extra $700 in taxes on it

When I was in Australia we were mistaken for Irish. We’re from the Midwest, one of the most stereotypical American accents.

@TheDrizzle404 I’ve never had good waitstaff when tipping wasn’t involved. Even at places it’s not expected but appreciated they are nicer. Maybe if you aren’t used to the level of service you get in the US you wouldn’t understand but what I’ve seen in EU and Australia it’s remarkably bad.

@TheDrizzle404 the gov does so much of this. Just watch a court case sometime and you’ll see how weak of a case they’ll prosecute and spend hundred of thousands on in hopes of getting guilty for someone who is obviously innocent.

@TheDrizzle404 I like the tipping system personally. Everywhere I go where tipping isn’t a thing (including cities in the US who have done away with it) I’ve had the rudest waitstaff who wouldn’t check on us and forget things on our order and don’t try to make it right, or maybe give us one refill. The menu prices always end up being much higher and we usually pay less overall because the wait staff doesn’t make as much, since we tip 20% normally. Even when I worked at a coffee shop and made an actual wage that didn’t depend on tips but we got tips occasionally we were extra courteous just because we would get occasional tips.
