One could argue that it’s the ultimate “selection” for top athletes. Phelps for instance would have an “unfair advantage” because his arms are longer, others have genetic advantages that have brought them into being in the top .1% of their sport that no amount of training could compensate for. Some are children of previous Olympic athletes and you could argue have been genetically bred to be better than the competition. As with every other aspect of life not everyone is created equal, you can do your best to give them a level playing field but some are smarter, faster, richer, etc and will always excel. In decades past they probably would have allowed them to compete and not understand why they were so strong, now we know and maybe should correct for it.

Women can beat men, this is something that people overlook in these competitions and allow for the “but see she lost to another woman” argument to flourish. Women can beat men, when I tested for my black belt I was up against another blackbelt just as qualified as I was but better known as a “fighter” who was a guy. He didn’t land a hit on me because I got the first hit in and he lost his confidence. Something like that could have happened here.

Is this because they cannot ovulate or because they do not have eggs to begin with? Women are born with all their egg reserves that are slowly depleted throughout their lives. There are conditions like pcos that typically lead to higher levels of testosterone that cause women not to be able to ovulate and produce eggs despite being XX and having (typically very high numbers) eggs.

@AngelinoShred this is very true. It’s one reason a lot of the trans issues are difficult to deal with, because they are accepted as fact as a pure medical condition rather than as a symptom of something else. For instance Anorexia is actually a form of OCD, it was first diagnosed as a symptom which is what led to more research being done. Because of that they’re able to treat it appropriately rather than saying “this is just what their bodies are”. Anorexia Nervosa is a separate condition but it is related to OCD and an obsession with food, it’s also related to people who are obsessed with fitness, health, food aversion etc. That may be the same thing with gender dysphoria but it is being accepted as a separate condition despite having all the ear marks of a social contagion obsession similar to anorexia.

I think it’s been assumed that they presented as female just because of social norms in the culture but I’m not sure if this has been confirmed.

Isn’t this one other biological advantage caused by an abnormality in genetics? Phelps have inordinately long arms that gives him a genetic advantage over others.

Can we just agree the Olympics need tighter controls on their qualification standards. Maybe Algeria requires your biological sex to be on your passport, but many countries do not and all it takes is one poor unscrupulous country to allow it and the sport will be over thrown. Other events require testosterone level tests and doping tests (because they’ve had issues with that in the past), and their main reason for not allowing it is that it’s humiliating and invasive, but it can be done as a blood test.

There have been biological women who have been prevented from participating due to higher testosterone levels due to conditions like PCOS. It’s not high enough to cause an advantage, but high enough for it to trigger a flag.
