  3. I had an Uber driver who was a Milwaukee cop once, it was the most enlightening ride i ever had. The guy was so incredibly genuine, told me not to bother tipping because he wasn't doing it for the money and he knew i was dropping a lot for car repairs. I asked him why he was doing it and he said "after 20 years on the job, i just need to see there are still good people out there. I deal with the same crappy crazy people every day, i try and try and try to help, but they never listen. When one of them dies or gets seriously injured or arrested i feel like I've failed them, and something always happens to them. I just want to know there are good people, and that there is a difference i can make to people's lives, even if it's just a cheap ride home when they're drunk, or helping them get groceries".

  8. I've been a life long atheist/agnostic. When I was younger I cared about this. Now i actually work with a lot of churches for charity because the message doesn't matter only the good that it can do. This i feel like is a group for edgy teens and parents who grew up religious and want to get back at their parents for whatever reason.

  10. I have panic attacks and can't wear a mask for more than about 5 minutes. I was kicked out of places and demonized, followed around in stores and yelled at by people like Ana. The fact i had a medical condition that caused me to hyperventilate didn't seem to matter when i couldn't get food.

She also wouldn't drive because she had been car jacked 3 times. She blamed herself because "They just don't have anything". Think we heard this before from some white people in south Minneapolis

  17. Our city planning committee was filled with real estate agents who were getting exclusive deals to build multifamily buildings. They were redistricting everything to the point where single family homes couldn’t even be built in most of the city. This was in 2006-2007 and no one ended up buying the buildings because of the housing crash. It ended up losing the homes in the area that suddenly became full of cheap multifamily homes that were empty loosing about 10k-50k value each. It ended up being a big lawsuit/settlement that ended up in those neighborhoods getting about 10k to improve their homes to make up for the lost value and all those real estate agents losing their jobs. They even sold out the entire river side park that was beloved by locals to a large apartment complex again in 2008. Luckily it ended up taking 10 years to build because of the collapse but now the riverfront parks that had millions invested them are gone, and entire historic down town has their view of the river (and usually the building parking lots were torn up) for cheap condos built right on a river that floods regularly.

  18. I was in a sorority that was very anti-hazing, the other sororities at our school had some pretty nasty ones (sleeping with a guy from their allied fraternity). I wouldn't say we had a weaker bond than the other sororities, but there probably was lower retention - but much less resentment/backstabbing.

  21. When I lived in milwaukee you’d see stolen cars all the time. People would grind down the license plates, take them off or paint them. One of my nurses had her car stolen 12 times in 6 months. Every time she knew who did it but cops had a catch and release until they were 18 so it was just a game. Also it’s the only place I’ve been where you see car accidents that are both side hit and run all the time. Nobody sticks around after an accident because half the time it ends in a shoot out.

  25. An Asian coworker of mine also talked about how proud she was to follow in the footsteps of MLK and how her daughter won an award for being black (Indian).   30. There is a lot of that that comes out in Law and Crime chat. Often with no evidence wild theories come up that the chat talks itself into believing must be true. The Zachariah Anderson case had no DNA evidence (well one possible blood spot in his truck that had male DNA that couldn’t be ruled out it was the victim - or Zachariah Anderson) and the jury convicted. I assume the jury didn’t understand “could have been his DNA or the victims” didn’t mean “was the victims”.

  37. I grew up in a small town out side the twin cities. There wasn’t a murder for 30+ years until there was a double murder in broad daylight on Main Street (drug related immediately arrested). Within 5 years murders are pretty common there. I don’t even want to think about what the town is like now 15 years later. It was a town where you knew all the cops, knew the cops kids, everyone was friendly, very sad to lose my town. (Not Goodhue by the way).

  50. When I lived in Milwaukee and car theft was so common there was a 50/50 if you got in an accident that the other car would flee, probably a 25% that both cars would flee. There were usually half a dozen cars you’d see on the highway even for a short sprint that would have no plates and disappear the moment a cop got on the road. We saw at least 1 crash a year that were obviously stolen cars involved most were hit and runs. My nurse had her car stolen 8 times in a year. She knew who was doing it, it was her kids friends but they got 0 punishment and cops usually didn’t bother with it.

  54. I recently needed a unique prescription. My doc, nurses, insurance company, pharmacy all said “don’t worry it will get denied twice and then accepted”. Why it gets denied twice, no idea. But sometimes those procedures are just the SOP. If you look at insurance companies acceptance of that medication it’s only 33% because it always gets denied twice and then accepted, not that only 33% of patients get it covered.

Many owned rifles because they were investing in weapons for their own defense and the weapons were personally owned not owned by the government (government couldn't have afforded giving everyone a rifle). I have several friends who immigrated, first for school and eventually married US citizens and only one was for citizenship (and then they got divorced about a year after, but it was a legitimate marriage things just went south). They all love America so much, it’s hard to describe the appreciation they feel for their new country. You don’t get the same love and appreciation if you don’t come here legally it seems. Maybe they do, but it sure seems like there is a lot more apprehension about integration into wider society, which drives them into their communities to not accept the American way of life. I don’t know how to fix that other than telling them they have to come here legally so they can be free.

Last year was the first time I saw people openly stealing while shopping.   144. I’m in Kentucky and we have 5000 homes permitted in about a 3 mile area near us. Unfortunately we don’t have the infrastructure for it and instead the city and governor are just permitting all construction without any consideration for roads, utilities, and emergency response (which is already very stretched as it relies on a near by town of 800 to pay for it rather than the larger city who’s collecting the taxes for our neighborhood). The south is growing faster than it should be because it was cheap. Now it’s home for illegals and migrant workers.

  229. They may have mistaken a cop “pulling a side arm” for putting their hand on it. Those are very different interactions. A lot of cops just rest their hand on it because it’s on their hip. If he wasn’t used to the interaction with American police he may have misinterpreted what was going on. Many teens have claimed a cop “pulled a gun on them” but it’s usually seeing a gun or taser and not realizing cops have them on them at all times. Pulling a gun even by a back woods cop in the 90s would not be something he could get away with. Had your friend reported it he would have been immediately dismissed and possibly faced fines/jail time for that action.

  291. Okay. I couldnt make it though your argument without giving a handful of corrections: Embryonic development is very well understood for the first trimester. I'm currently pregnant (via IVF) and not only did my hormone levels (blood test) give exact age of the embryo it was within a very specific range. It may be plus or minus a day but for the first 6-8 weeks it's pretty much spot on unless the fetus is already dying in which case it will be significantly lower than the target and shouldn't line up with a conception date, your blood work also won't double at the correct rate (which is why two blood tests are performed 48 hours apart). That's in the early weeks. I had weekly ultrasounds (because IVF), and each time a different ultrasound tech who didn't know when our date of transfer was, they all got the embryonic age within a day. Now at 30 weeks there is a week difference between what I am and what the baby is measuring at (baby is 10 days ahead of schedule). But that's taken as an average based on so many different factors (head circumference, shoulder width, arm lengths, fluid levels, intestinal development etc). Saying they can be off by a week is all based on what the mother claims to be (based on her cycle) and not what the doctor can see based on the development of the fetus. 10 out of 10 it's because the mother doesn't actually know when she ovulated and is making her best guess which could be off by weeks. Having the doc say "this is how far you are" based on an ultrasound is about as scientific as you can get and should be required over the mother's "I'm 4 weeks" or whatever. Also - 2 weeks pregnant = not pregnant, that means you may not have even had sex yet to become pregnant. You don't become pregnant until week 3 when the embryo is about 6 days old and is actually implanted. About 5 days later you can see hormonal changes. Which is why most women find out at 4 weeks. You are saying this is all based on religious right arguments but not a single religious argument was made in the supreme court ruling. It was all legal arguments that have been well understood for a decade or more. There are other possible avenues to take it back to the courts but you're the one who's making moralistic and emotional arguments in favor of it. My state is very prolife - it's one where abortion is now banned. It was incredibly easy here to get an abortion - at worst you had to drive 4 hours to a clinic once, and that was if you for some reason wanted to stay in state, others were much closer. Now you have to drive 4 hours and 5 minutes across the border to the next abortion clinic. They also would mail you abortifacient, no questions asked. It's hard to believe that I'm this incredibly conservative state (apparently) with very strict abortion rules that they would be loser than what you are describing. What you are describing are the far outliers and likely just dicks who work the front desk. Most of those stories are made up out of whole cloth, based on stories from 30+ years ago or are exaggerations (eg there weren't any appointments for a week because the doc was out of town and they thought it was because of some other reason). Stop making emotional and religious arguments when they weren't brought up in the first place and learn some facts about early pregnancy if you want to make an argument. Also viability is at 20 weeks 1 day, 5 months (just over half way through the pregnancy) currently, probably won't get any lower unless there are major advancements in fetal transplantation.

This was in 2015, so it isn't like "back in my day". Oh and we had to pay 2-3k in "fees" for the school too. It was in the middle of nowhere, but it was the same as students living in Seattle. Because sellers will have first and not first time buyers it probably will just mean that the first time buyers have an edge and can afford more driving up costs slightly. They’re also often kept for observation and to make sure the meds are okay before being sent home. Panic attacks can also trigger heart attacks, my grandfather in law set himself on fire, had a panic attack because of it which set off a heart attack. I was very close to her mom before her death, basically living at their house. I sat next to her at the funeral and half way through we broke out laughing because we were both complete messes. We still laugh about that now 22 years later. That was a week after her death though. The whole week leading up to it she didn't talk to anyone except a counselor and would cry at the drop of a hat. I get it's a child losing an adult not an adult losing a child but i would think the emotions would be similar. Don't think the sheriff and FBI didn't select those parents though, they probably were the ones keeping it together enough to give a press conference. We had 15 houses we were looking at on Friday, all but 2 sold within 24 hours of being put on the market for 25%+ over asking, in cash, no appraisal no inspection, no contingencies, no tour. Another house we put a bid on 10% over asking ended up being sold for 30% over cash, no inspection, no tour, no nothing, and they weren't even bidding against anyone (except our 10% over offer). There is no bidding war that goes on, they just put in more than you can ever put in there, and some sellers are holding out until someone comes in with a better order, making buyers put in 24 hour "take it or leave it" clauses. Our agent specifically told us the only houses that are selling to "real people" are for sale by owner. Yes there are a lot of Californians going and buying up houses because they have a lot of money, all of them will sell in a year when salaries get readjusted for cost of living. Most of the Californiana though were going last year and that's starting to slow down. Building is also way up because of inflated building costs due to new tariffs etc, a house we were going to build went up 100k in 6 months. Sorry...but if you were looking in this housing market everything they said makes 100% sense.

I got 2 years of community college for free (many states have this for over achieving highschool students but don't promote it because they lose funding) I still needed up going to a private (out of state) college for 4 years, lived in dorms the whole time, didn't get grants but there is always some wiggle room money if you know how to negotiate. The cost of my school was 70k ish on paper but no one paid more than 35 unless your parents were millionaires. I came out with about 80k in debt and don't pay a cent until after i completed grad school. This was because when i graduated in 2012 in a STEM degree i would have made minimum wage so i though "ill take my chances with grad school and paying off my debt then" so my loans didn't become due until I graduated in 2016. We focused on my husbands 75k in debt, paid it off in 6 years from graduation, paid mine off 4 years after leaving grad school and we just penny pinched for that time. Got a hand me down used car for a couple grand, had a nice apartment, paid for our wedding and honeymoon out of pocket and still managed to pay it down quickly. Be conscious of what you're spending money on and know you won't get the super duper nice stuff for 5-6 years but you can easily get it if you're just smart. We saw this with the Floyd case - a cop drew his weapon on him and gave orders to see his hands once floyd was able to tell him what was going on and obey simple instructions (I believe it was stating his name) the cop dropped the gun and immediately went to handcuff him and explain why he pulled the gun. There's a reason you can get cheap drugs in Mexico that may or may not cause serious side effects.

The down payment was meant to be essentially earnest money entry into the market (you can prove you can pay for it now keep going). Now you’re giving people 25k even if they can’t afford the first and last months rent. Most people don’t put 20% down, so you’re still going to have a PMI and it’s likely not going to cover homes that 25k work actually be a 20% down because those homes barely exist anymore. My brother’s house in backwoods South Carolina is going for 220k and it’s basically a teardown on a terrible street.

  838. I'm a huge fan of crime podcasts and crime TV shows. I've noticed since 2020 (maybe a bit earlier) the "innocent" push has been much much higher especially with black defendants. I'm guessing they're doing it for the ratings or because lawyers are reaching out to get them to take the case. They always pick the high profile ones that don't hold water while ignoring some of the lower profile ones. For instance a black girl who was convicted 20 years after a murder that she apparently committed 30 miles away from her school while she was in school (attendance records show it) when she was 11. Because one of her finger prints was found on duct tape around the victims head even though the duct tape came from her grandpas workshop and her grandpa was a handy man for the guy who was murdered. They say she committed it on her own with no motive. But that's just not a case they want to take up.
