This is 100% right. The reason so many could "afford" college back in the day was because college was ONLY for those who could afford it, there wasn't the option to take out debt. My parents went in the 70s and they worked their way through without much from my grandparents. Both wanted jobs that you needed degrees for - which is the only reason they went. Nether had debt when they left college because they took their time working their way through.

This is exactly it. Kids expect that when you're off campus you can still afford the lux apartments on your entry level job. If they decided to get a roommate and a modest apartment they could easily pay it off.

This won't satisfy those who are getting debt forgiven. They'll still owe money every month, it'd just instead of paying $320 a month they'll pay $310. They probably won't even notice.

Got my MA in engineering because it deferred my loans while i was in school. Only made 18k a year as a TA/RA but made it out and got a decent living. 4 years of scrimping and saving (granted i still ate out a decent amount and could still take vacations back home when needed) ended up paying off, and was way more satisfying.

For everyone. No reason the smart people who didn't go to college because they knew better should be punished.

I went to a private, out of state, school and was in a dorm for 4 years (paid for a single, even had a luxury dorm for a summer semester, and was a sorority memeber). But i also got a decent degree and paid off my loans within 7 years because i decided to wait to buy a car, get a apartment with a roommate, didn't take vacations or take on any other debt. Being responsible with paying off loan debt should be emphasized. Don't take out loans, then expect a luxury apartment when you get out.
