I lived on 17k a year for 4 years while i was in grad school. It was 40+ hours worth of research/classwork and another 20 for teaching (hence why they paid us so poorly but we did get healthcare lite for most small things). I know about a hundred others who all made the same amount. NONE of us lived paycheck to paycheck. It may have been tight and it wasn't like we saved a lot but I don't know any of them who couldn't make a flight domestically internationally every year (maybe every 2). I needed to drop $1200 on an MRI when i busted my knee luckily I didn't need surgery, and then I just had to go without lunch for a couple days but I was in so much pain i couldn't go shopping anyways. This was in 2015, so it isn't like "back in my day". Oh and we had to pay 2-3k in "fees" for the school too. It was in the middle of nowhere, but it was the same as students living in Seattle. They survived too...just with more roommates.
