I wish to share my own insight about things you can to do as you age to avoid problems down the road. I realize that owning a cat can be a great comfort, but if you start having problems with your balance, cats can become a big danger since they like to walk in front of us, or dart out in front of us as we are walking. So you might want to give it more thought if you don't already own a cat. When I had my left knee replaced, I purchased a shower chair to sit on while showering. This is a great piece of equipment to keep in your shower to help give you some added stability. If you find that you need a walker, you can easily find them at a low cost at resale shops, garage sales, etc. Last, I no longer enjoy shopping, so I now order things from Amazon, and I also have Instacart for grocery deliveries.

We Americans are very spoiled. Let's be honest. If we are blessed to live to an old age, then we just do the best that we can. If it is a nursing home, then so be it! I'm 70, and never ever expect my son to give up his life to take care of me.

@marilynmccall2879 do you have any idea how long it takes to help an elderly and sometimes combative person to the bathroom? Do you realize that the staff is also helping patients, dress, brush their teeth, bathe. Try working there yourself! You wouldn't last a day!!!!!!

You did the best you could, and there was no other choice. The dementia took that smile, not the nursing home. No one wants to go to a nursing home. We are all paying the price of modern medicine which allows us to live a long time now.

@Advicefortheelderly , really? So you feel that giving up your entire life and giving 24/7 care for an elder is okay? Are you serious???? That is so incredibly selfish and just plain wrong! I never want my son to stop living his life and give it up to care for my husband and I. He would have to give up his job, and no socialization. You are very wrong about this. Shameful !

You have been and are very blessed, and I bet that you were wise enough to save up money through the years so that you could afford to live comfortably. You are also blessed that you are able to stay active. I have debilitating, crippling arthritis, and so at 70 I am very limited. But I am thankful for living this long.

@Achill101 I'm so glad to hear about your dad doing well at the nursing home! My mom saved up for years so that she and my step-dad could live in a good care facility. She loved it, and made lots of great friends. But unfortunately after she had a stroke, she showed signs of dementia. She would get angry at me for hugging her, and that broke my heart. But for the most part there are lots of precious and good memories.

And what happens when you need care around the clock? Will he be able to afford to pay someone to stay with you while he's at work?

You say God blesses him, yet your screen name is "ElderlyRegrets". What do you regret? Do you realize that there are children who didn't get to live until they went to high school, or got married, or drove a car because of cancer? You should be thankful instead of regretful.

@ well that's not at all true. My mom never wanted for my brother or I to quit our jobs and give up our lives to take care of her, so she wisely saved up money for years so that she and my step-dad could live in a very nice senior care center. She wasn't a selfish and self-centered person when she got older, and neither am I. I tell my son often that I NEVER expect him to give up his own life to take care of me. If I live to an age when I can't take care of myself, I don't care if I go to a nursing home. God has blessed me with plenty all of these years!

@snjezanaspahija249 l have no regrets. My mom saved money wisely so that she could live at a very nice retirement home. She planned instead of just spending with no thoughts or plans.

@caveyful , or you could CHOOSE to be thankful that God gave you a long life, and make the best of it. Or would you rather change places with little children who have cancer, and will never live long enough to experience what we've been allowed to experience. It's YOUR choice to see life as a negative or a positive.

Americans, do you realize that we are very blessed with modern medicine which allows most of us to live a very long time? And with that comes a price. The price being that when you can no longer take care of yourself, you have to often give up a lot. Just reality.

@RataPerry ohhh, so only if the parent/parents are COMBATIVE, then they can go to a facility. PLEASE tell me how the child/children will be able to provide 24/7 care without having to quit their job. And then when they quit their job, who will pay the bills? See? Your emotions are overriding your logic.

@RataPerry my husband and I have a two-bedroom home. My mom and step-dad both required hospital beds because of their condition. My mom also needed a lift to help her out of bed to dress. So where would we put two hospital beds and a lift in our tiny home? You lack logic.

@leegilley221 my mom, dad and step-dad have now passed on, and trust me when I say that I did a lot for all three of them. Instead of doing something I enjoyed, I would visit them almost every day, then take home their laundry to do, and shop for their needs. I have few regrets. But I will never ever agree that children should quit their jobs, stop living their life to take care of their parents 24/7! I am a Christian and a good person. But to demand that an adult child stop having their own life in order to take care of me when I can't is complete arrogance, selfishness, and CRUEL !

Parents are still living their lives while raising children. Adult children who have to care for elderly who need 24 hr care give up their entire life! Pls use reasoning about this.

@ those aren't nurses. Those are nursing aids, and they get paid very little for the work they do. Could YOU do their job? Could you lift people and change their dirty diapers, even if they are combative? Could you run every single time someone rings the buzzer no matter what else you are taking care of with another patient? Do you have any idea how many patients one CNA takes care of at one time?

@ now that Trump is back in office, and Elon Musk is finding more and more ways for tax dollars to be saved, now is time for all of us to write to Trump and ask for him to look into better care in nursing homes, and more affordable alternatives to nursing homes.

Seriously? If someone is blessed enough to live that long, unlike children who die of cancer before they can enjoy life to it's fullest, then just be thankful ! Yes, living in a nursing home is not at all like living in your own home. So if you are going to INSIST ON LIVING AT HOME UNTIL YOU PASS ON, THEN YOU DAMN WELL BETTER SAVE UP ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY FOR 24/7 CARE FROM A PROVIDER OF YOUR CHOICE! What a ridiculous video! SMH

I have told my son over and over that I NEVER expect him to take care of my husband and I when we can't take care of ourselves. But I'm not a selfish person like many on this page.
