Am I the only one who wouldn't buy any of these three? I'd have a Mazda3, an Alfa Giulietta or, if I can be boring, an Astra.

Dave 101 Thank you. You see, the Merc goes against everything its badge stands for, the Audi is a posh Golf and the BMW is about five million years old by now.

Dave 101 Indeed. The A-Class is also uncomfortable and has the worst screen integration in automotive history. It shares a one too many bits with the Renault Mégane and the Nissan Pulsar, the latter of which has enough rear legroom to compete two classes above. The Merc, however, is cramped. The Audi is completely taken to the cleaners by the Golf, which in itself is an overpriced Seat Leon. The Bimmer at least has RWD: it's my favourite of the three. But, with these prices, I'd have the similarly sporty Mazda or Alfa anyway. By the time you can get a 1-Series with enough power to make RWD fun, you might as well buy an Alfa Giulia 2.0

Dave 101 The Giulietta is actually a very reliable car, contrary to what its badge implies. It's not without its issues, but it's far more reliable than the (believe it or not) problem-ridden VW Golf.

Dave 101 The Mazda is more economical thanks to its clever engines (they use more on paper, but less in real life) and its interior is far more ergonomical. The Alfa, however, has more torque and arguably a prettier interior design. The Giulietta, in my opinion, is even prettier than the already-gorgeous Mazda. Both are practical-ish, but far from excellent in this case. Both have fantastic handling. The Mazda is one of the most reliable cars in its class, more than the Alfa, but the Alfa copes better with rust. The Mazda is lighter, but the Alfa is faster. Long story short: which one's better for you depends on your preferences.

Dave 101 I'm mostly taking motoring journalists' findings into account, mind you, because while I've been in both cars, I've never driven either. I suggest you test drive both and try them out for a bit, and judge on that :)

Hero87 What generation Astra was that? More importantly, were you driving like a twat? joe bloggs The Mazda is significantly lighter and is therefore at least as sharp as the BMW, despite FWD. Quality only applies in terms of panel gaps, but that's nitpicking whereas the Mazda is far more reliable. The 1-Series with more potent engines are too expensive to justify buying over a petrol Giulia. Depreciation is a heap of bollocks, you buy a car for you and not the person who buys it off your hands eventually.

Dave 101 No problem, I'm glad I could help :)

joe bloggs I've actually driven a 1-Series before. The steering felt like it was connected through rubber bands, it's truly appalling. I've never driven the Mazda, but it's most likely better anyway. The BMW is pricey largely due to its brand name. It might surprise you that even the infotainment screen of the Mazda is better. The 3 is only slightly less practical if anything. It's not directly a cost, though, is it? Personally, I think depreciation is an idiotic reason to (not) buy a car.
