I can name a few frustrating caves in the Pokémon series, though Diamond, Pearl and Platinum's Turnback Cave takes the cake. It has you navigate through several rooms, with one entrance and three exits each. One of the three sends you to the next room, the others send you back to where you back to the first room. Apparently, there's a pattern to determine which exit to use, but it is incredibly complicated, impossible to figure out while playing and seemingly random. There are many variations of the rooms, and they're in random order. It's awful. I made it through once by luck, but I gave up five times before that.

Slif_One The trainers weren't that challenging for an overpreparing item hoarder like me, but the cave and the wild Zubat are the stuff of nightmares.

Mohammad Hussein Sure, Whitney's easy... if you get a Machop. Or a Geodude or someting. Whitney's not unbeatable, there are strategies to get past her. But, when using a normal team on a normal playthrough (so not one with all sorts of Pokémon you just caught in order to beat Whitney), she's bloody hard.

Slif_One Oh, that is indeed annoying. Or any cave that requires Flash. Remember the cave between Cerulean City and Lavender Town? I could never be bothered to catch a Bellsprout Flash slave, so I made it through by instinct. I got lost once and had to restart the game because I couldn't get out and had run out of Escape Ropes. I hate that place.

Slif_One In Gen 1, Brock didn't have any Rock-type moves. I spammed Ember to abuse Geodude's terrible special bulk and take it out, but I took Onix down with my Lv. 14 Spearow. He had the bulk to take Onix's pathetic Tackles easily. His only true trick is Bide, but that doesn't have priority in Gen 1. I was faster, so if I simply attacked him, there would be no consequences for me, but I'd still get a few free turns. Thus, I used Leer six times, then spammed Peck. If he'd use Bide, I'd spam Growl for a while until Peck was safe to use again. I loved how I managed to take down Onix with what is pretty much the least suitable Pokémon for that job.

Slif_One Really? I like Pidgeot, but it's very weak. Fearow and Dodrio are slightly better, but Fearow is ugly (at least in my opinion) and Dodriio shouldn't be able to use Fly. I prefer Gen IV's birds. There's only one, Staraptor, but it's one of my favourite Pokémon.

Slif_One Mega Pidgeot is very powerful. But while he's gotten better over time, he was terrible until OR/AS introduced the Pidgeotite. Drill Peck is amazing. I remember using it on my first Pokémon ever (Empoleon, biatches!), but it's probably the best choice for Dodrio. Really, you like Noctowl? I think its offenses are far too weak. His special bulk is quite impressive, but he is physically frail. I'd use it if I were an early Flying-type Gym Leader, but aside from that, I constantly forget about it.

Slif_One That's actually what I tend to do now. I when I beat Steven in OR/AS, the only Pokémon in my team that I got early on was Swampert, my starter. Then, it was Latios, which I recieved at Lv. 30. I couldn't access it until I had Surf. All the other ones were caught between the sixth and seventh gym, except Arcanine, which I caught after the Groudon incident. Noctowl is quite good early on, but as a Hoothoot, it's still terrible. I never actually use it. But, like you said, its Psychic-type moves are useful against Rock-types, which is one of the reasons why I'd use it as an early Flying-type Gym Leader.

Slif_One Oh, I did that several times. When I once accidentally underleveled myself, I was Lv. 70 when I challenged Cynthia. I lost. That was when I realised I should train multiple Pokémon at once.

Slif_One I once did a solo run of Platinum with a Ratatta. It worked wonders. Though I will admit, I couldn't catch one in Platinum and couldn't be bothered to catch and trade one from the Johto remakes, so I hacked it with max IV's, 255 EV's in every stat and the exact Nature I wanted it to have. That turned out to be overkill, as the game had become very easy that way (Double Battles were a challenge, though). Still, it was nice to have done that once.
