I remember in my senior year of high school in the late 1960s, which was made up, primarily, of wealthy, white kids (wheareas I was very middle class), we were required to take a class entitled “Americanism vs. Communism”. This was during the height of the Vietnam War, when we were beginning to see the boys who graduated just before us go off to war and, frequently not come home, or come home missing limbs or mentally damaged. Somehow, even then, even though I was not at all socially sophisticated in any way, I could see that it was entirely propaganda. And, of course, this was in Florida.

Interesting how the right-wingers often crop up in comments nowadays that “we’re a Republic, not a Democracy”, and “state’s rights”. How history repeats. While I agree 100% with the fact that these same people (the Birchers, and Bircher-types) were and are part and parcel of the racism problem and antisemitism, I would venture to guess there’s an underlying aspect to the anti-feminist movement today because of the staunch conservative base of the anti-feminists and it’s patriarchal foundation.

And don’t forget that the father of the infamous Koch brothers, Charles and David, who advised Reagan in what we now call “the dumbing down of America”, was one of the founding fathers of the John Birch Society.
