  2. I guess he thinks The Inquisition (which began in 1164) and witch burnings (which started a couple hundred years later) were good times. Let’s remind him that a number of men were burned as witches, too. (And yes, the burning of witches lasted 300 years!) Also, shortly after 1220 there was a massive, years-long famine throughout Europe, not to mention regular uprisings of peasants against the rich people/landowners because of what we would today consider “liberal” reasons. Then they had The Black Death to look forward to, not that he’d still be alive by then. And, of course, the average lifespan for a man was about 46 to 50 years. Yeah, good times. I’m reading an excellent book about those times now called Caliban and the Witch by Silvia Federici.
