  1.  @whynottalklikeapirat , As an American, I sure do wish we had a government that reflects the policies of your countries. Unfortunately, the far-right has been working very hard for the last forty or fifty years to dominate our political system, and they have bastardized the Democratic Socialist point of view to mean Nazi- and Communist-style “Socialism” to the point that they won’t even entertain that word, and can’t understand the difference between that and Democratic Socialism, which is why even the “left” (neocons) wouldn’t allow Bernie Sanders to be on the final ticket. It’s a sad state of affairs when you consider the arc of our country’s history, especially in the first half of the 20th Century, or from FDR until about 1973. I felt the shift in that year, even though I was young and knew nothing about politics.

  4. Yes, many of us do. Unfortunately, many others want a strongman to lead them (and control them, I presume), and they don’t understand what kind of end result that brings. The sad thing about many Americans is they are dazzled by “celebrity” (hence the Ronald Reagan presidency and the Arnold Schwarzenegger governorship - and trump, people [men] with no political knowledge or experience whatsoever). I don’t understand it at all. Reagan was a puppet for ultra-conservative groups, and really hurt the country, with lasting effect. Schwarzenegger nearly destroyed the California economy. Thankfully, we got a couple of guys in both offices afterwards (esp. California) who turned things around, then trump came along and so many people were, once again, dazzled by his celebrity and tough talk. I’m not sure many of those voters will ever recognize the effects that (lack of) thinking has on our country, as many of them are hoping to vote for him again. We, as a country, also have a problem punishing “bad guys” who have or have had power, but I’m hopeful that - finally - trump will be prosecuted, at least to the point where he won’t ever be able to hold public office again. I’m not putting money on it yet, but it’s looking more and more like a possibility every day. Here’s hoping!
