It sounds like giving D.C. statehood is as difficult as giving women equal rights in the Constitution. Even after the Equal Rights Amendment was ratified by the 38th state (thank you, Virginia) in 2020, they’re still fighting over it because there was a deadline which went by a number of years ago, even though the deadline was not written in the text of the Amendment, and no other amendment has ever been not passed into law because of a deadline. I wonder if either will ever happen.

@jasonbailey9139 That sounds a lot like West Virginia. Many, many people in the U.S. don’t even know that West Virginia is its own state and not just the western part of Virginia (as it was before the Civil War when it seceded from Virginia and went with the North).

@jasonbailey9139 I can relate to that! But nobody has a problem with North and South Dakota or Carolina. I think it’s the West thing because it’s the only one, and, as you say, there’s no East Virginia. It’s funny, but West Virginians came up with a good expression that comes from people saying, “oh, you’re from West Virginia? I have friends in Roanoke.” West Virginians answer: “that’s WEST by God Virginia!” They also get peeved that people from other states think West Virginians are the most ignorant (or, rather, uneducated) people in the country when they (people from other states) don’t even know that WV is a separate and distinct state, or even that it seceded from Virginia during the Civil War, which was also unheard of elsewhere in the country. That was a rather big deal to folks from WV.
